Remember, The simpsons series, Homer simpson is the father of three-Lisa,Margie and Bart a dog and a cat.His wife being Marge. The vatican recently said Homer and Bart are catholics and that the parents should allow their kids to watch the episodes….hehehe:) blessing from the pope literally…well despite the fact that some acts like beer drinking of homer contradict teachings of the good book..or its a case of a little wine for thy stomach’s sake?..
So go ahead spoil yourself with animation….by spoil i mean enjoy it…
But my one request to Pope Benedict is to make Homer simpson a saint…yeah if he’s already approved why not?

femme fatales
Well, dont stare at me like that,it means women who are jinxed…The story ran in one of the local dailies of a certain lady 40 yrs of age yet has been married more than four times. The first marriage was great, the villagers were in awe of the couple, after getting their first child, the husband died in an accident. She was consoled and two years later, hitched up with a second hand car dealer. She got married and lived well.As bad luck would have it,the husband was abducted and killed by carjackers.Similar tragedies happened to her other marriages. As a result, the villagers would murmur how she is ‘cursed’ in low tones.
Well, am not a geek, i cant simply explain such scenarios and not even the mganga kutoka tanzania..daktari so and so…can. Some would argue, well its just bad luck born from her family…What do you think?

Retirement? Naaaah!
Yes is said it…retirement is a term relegated to world war II period..We are living in an age where lifestyles have changed.10 years ago,by the time one has worked to 55 yrs, especially in civil service, the only thing that will escort you home is a pension or golden handshake. Thanks to tough economic times, many people are working way past the retirement age.
My mom for example has been in the civil service for the past three decades, today she is active in the women organisations and businesses..yet she only has two years to retirement(55yrs) the additional 5 yr increment by the government limit age(60) are too much for her she says having a personal ambition and goal overrides all else.
This has got me thinking, that you are only as old as your brain is…engaging in active life is the way to go.Many of us often complain that life is boring..well have an open mind, there’s a lot going on around you, have a free spirit, live a life full of passion, pursue your ambitions….Joyce Meyer says…ENJOY EVERYDAY LIFE…

Open Intimacy
An article today ran on the Daily Nation concerning how ‘loving’ today’s parents are even in front of their children as young as 2yrs old.The article details of a parent who was called by the headmistress to her son’s school only to be told that her child was caught making out with a classmate in the school’s playground. So, where did he learn this?
On further investigations, the child revealed that while playing at a neighbours house, with his friend, they peeped into the parents bedroom whose door was partially open and noticed yeah…the couples session.Sad as it is,this is just but a reflection of how far our society has gone..in terms of morals and parenting..back in the days,if a girl even showed her pants to the boys, she would face the wrath of her mother.
Parents and older persons have a critical role to play in showing guidance to the younger generation. When Pastor Allan and Kathy Kiuna of JCC were asked whether parents need to be luvy duvy in front of kids, they said OK.that a display of affection is healthy for children, since it makes them feel secure in the knowledge that their parents love each other.
Well, they maybe right but the question is to what extent, should kids know and see love? the verdict is yours..but know that today’s generation learn a lot at a very early age…i mean a kid of 2yrs knows a lot about intimacy thanks to media-tv,radio,magazines,music,newspapers etc.So, who will teach the child?

Kinight Michael Joseph
Remember the days we would scramble for a chance at the telephone booth just to make that critical call? Not so long ago, in fact 1o years ago. Then came a revolution that for beginners a few enjoyed-the mobile phone. At the time, they were huge and bulky. But then came Safaricom and Kencell….people bought phones and life changed since then….the latter, changed its stakeholders several times twice actually….but its subscribers did not grow. The former, christened the better option’ marked as green logo, grew steady and its subscribers grew to large numbers, the boosters were set up all over the country,7 yrs later, it went into the stock market, guys bought shares a lot.
The growth did not stop there, earlier, kenyans would go through hectic times to send money to their loved ones thru western union, money gram or physical locomotions.MPESA-mobile banking was born..they same up with bonga points promotions, the adverts are simply quality….
Today, help me laud this man who brought these changes…Mr. Michael Joseph, the immediate former safaricom CEO.Some would argue, what if he was President?….MJ as most call you….i simply enigmatise you….fare thee well, bon voyage…you’ve done well.

Big Fish Frying
write this with pride noting that the controversial sale of the Kenyan ambassadorial residence in Japan and Pakistan has seen the minister of foreign affairs Hon Mr. Wetangula and PS resign. It was more like bow down to public pressure.A few weeks back, the 272 million illegal sale of a piece of land in Ngong forest saw Higher eduction minister William Ruto suspended by the President..though he refused to willfully resign.
Added, Mr. Godfrey Majiwa the Nairobi Mayor has also seen nights in Kilimani police station and court over the multi-million shilling cemetery scandal. In case you read this and you aint kenyan….well lets say its a country that embraces impunity but this is about to end as the anti corruption commission draws in on the public .Great effort but is it just temporal and the vigor will fade with days to come?

Lack of media content?
Permit me if you may to reflect back to the days kenyan radio was educative.Back then, there was content on prime time programming(7am-10am breakfast and 3pm-7pm drive) on Radio. These days, though some of these FM stations have attained fame awards for their dare devilry by talking about ‘bedroom’ and ‘family’ issues that we have failed to talk i still perceive broadcast media as really above that.Be that as it may, the situation worsens with commercials that now form as part of the discussion links!
Advertising?
Spots sell the media at large.I take issue with some of the adverts that have semi-adult content coming up on air at peak time when your kids are with you in the living room watching. My goodness? what happened to ethics?
I know you probably think am making a fuss about nothing.Well, just in case you didnt know THE AIRWAVES is a public utility that must be used and handle with care.Part of the reforms seriously i must say should entail some of the stakeholders going back to media school! Yeah thats it…

DIGITAL VILLAGE?
In the remote village of Rumuruti, one old lady, Mrs. Magana Nyakio is causing a stir among the populace. Recently her daughter bought a digital TV as Christmas gift. A few meters to the famous shopping mall known by the commons as ‘center’ Baba Gitau a 65 year old civil retiree is busy chatting with a long-time friend in Abuja through the webcam at his shop. Ten years ago, things were different and Mrs. Opar Okinyi cannot mince her words on her visit to Magana’s place.
“Woi! My goodness now I can easily talk to my daughter in Amerca” she chuckles.
Until recently the technology skills were meant for the college going youth and people in the job market. However, the government through the Ministry of Information and Communication has initiated an E-Program meant to educate the masses in rural and urban areas on the potentials of using IT to their advantage-everyday tasks.
Mr. Peter Onsongo, a trader at the Kiamaiko market can easily get paid by fellow retailers in Nairobi through his mobile phone’s e-account. The traders deposit payments in his account and the subscriber informs Mr. Onsongo via SMS.
Across primary schools to Universities, students can be seen accessing class notes through online site, e-learning and the tutors only have to project it on the wall. The media has not been spared either, from originally purchasing old radio transistors to online broadcasting. Majority of the radio stations and TV can be accessed through kenyanmedia.com at even crystal clear reception. Mr. Mbugua nods his head unbelievably remembering the days he would climb the roof and direct the antenna towards Limuru.
“I would even put a stick to hold the aerial as moving it a bit would cause my TV reception to be blur” he says.
With laptops being affordable, children as young as 5 years can own one and learn alphabet easily as the computers come loaded with Virtual teacher.
The Chief no longer has piles of case files on his shelf as all the information is on soft copy even with villagers’ database. He would commute to the provincial headquarters to meet the governor but thanks to teleconferencing he can sit in the comfort of his office and simultaneously talk to the governor and other county chiefs.
All these may seem as imaginary for you, but project to 50 years from now. With the digital age already here with us, media will explode, the education system will eventually change. Thus concerted efforts with concerned parties must be laid in place to ensure masses are in smooth transition. Its possible to have an analogue free Africa!

CHURCH LIVE SERVICES
We had a pretty good argument the other day about going to church. In the Americas and Europe, many churches are closing(have closed) well simply because many people would nowadays opt to stay at home and watch NFL.Back hone the media has now brought church to our living rooms with Live services. What does this mean for the future? Is church relevant? One of my friends aptly says that church is a place of show-offs,of certain classes.Well maybe true. Why would you go(or not) to church? Reasons such as i slept/overslpt late,i can watch the TV or listen to Radio have been put forward. To me i suppose, even with technology there's no medium that can replace the human aspect of togetherness thats found in church.Give a hi five to your neighbour, tell them the Lord loves them Reverend says.A sudden expression of happiness is eveident on this congregant.Thats what you'll lose.
WORK FROM HOME IN AFRICA?
The other day in a senior Communication class, our lecturer amply asked us to write a reflection on What if I lack a job then…Pretty reversed question, right? No. Wrong! Unfortunately for many of us looking for a job right after graduation seems to be something ‘very easy’ and we are somewhat creating a ‘wishy-washy’ expectation of instant paved way jobs slots. I read an article from www.timesnewsonline.com and a story of one, Mary Steadman a mom from Nairobi struck me. She lost her job as an accountant representative at a factory and to make matters worse, her husband was retrenched. After the ordeal she embarked on online job searching and stumbled upon Google (but as you know it just a search engine).Online giant Google is a publicly traded company and is worth an estimated $100 Billion. The company has pioneered online search and has changed the way we use the internet. In a matter of weeks Mary and Kevin had a steady stream of income coming in via checks that were delivered to their home. They happened upon a system called "Google Biz Kit" that taught them how to make money posting links online.
Google Biz Kit is a course that can teach anyone, regardless of computer skill level to start making money online.
The times that we live in are fast paced and as jobs are hard to come by, innovation comes with necessity.
This is not the only thing they stumbled on, in her blog, Mary notes that they had to combine with another free course "Kit” where they learnt to make extra bucks.
Of course not every site that you Google on that promises great returns is genuine. Trace back with me the other day when several Kenyans were conned off their money through pyramid schemes. I further noted that to get started one needs to Get Google Biz Kit, only paying the 80 shillings for shipping. Then combining with Ebay Success Kit. Afterwards, start posting those links and Google will track everything. Follow the directions on Google Biz Kit that basically shows you how to and set up a Google account. You need them both. Then they will give you the website links to post. Start posting those links. Google tracks everything.
I know you are probably thinking that this is another of those grand schemes but why not try it out? If it worked for Mary, it could work for you. The times that we live in are fast paced and as jobs are hard to come by, innovation comes with necessity. You might sit there and think well I have a job why worry? Unless you are on permanent and pensionable scheme the route is the same.
Working online is quite normal in western countries, Europe and the Asian nations. Why not Africa? Kenya? The fiber optic cable is with us here and experts say beginning January 2010 Digital broadcasting will be on thereby witnessing explosion of stations. Companies are strategically aligning themselves and investing in Information Technology. You can’t afford to be left out. One advantage of online working is that it will be even from the comfort of your home, at the park, anywhere! However, you’ll surely miss social interaction with your workmates and those good laughs over tea break. Of course you’ll have to incur costs previously covered by your boss to learn a new skill/training. Whichever way you choose, realize that times are changing and you need to realign yourself on the information super highway.

A PENNY A DAY KEEPS THE DEBT AWAY
Ever thought of investing in the future? Well the other day I had a conversation with a friend over the issue of saving. A visit to many families today you wouldn’t fail to miss a piggy bank or just a small tin with several shillings in it. What for? You may ask or better still why not spend on today tomorrow will take care of itself? This is the concept that has killed many people’s dreams. Our parents today spend up to half on what they earn to pay our school fees, the rest is on other expenses such as medical, household stuff, mortgage, loans e.t.c. Saving for retirement or for the future is pegged on you to take care of them when you will be in the job market. A certain university lecturer told me that the first few years after you graduate from college are very vital, they could determine whether you’ll live in Runda or Kibera. Therefore, at this moment when most of us are getting few chums from our sponsors, parents why not save aside from your expenses for tomorrow? It may prove difficult as one noted but why live on today and forget the morrow.
The first few years after graduation are very essential for it will determine
The route your life will take-spend wisely
So, let’s get down to the basics, how do you spend your disposable income? Throw a party for your friends, buying credit, an extra for a black forest or chapatti smokie? Whatever you spend on there are some healthy practices you need to adopt.
First, start with a spending record. Yes, you have heard this advice before. This exercise is eye-opening if you do it diligently. If you have been unable to keep such a log because it is tedious or difficult to remember, consider using your debit card for every purchase. Today, you can find the Visa/MasterCard logo nearly everywhere you shop or buy, including many fast food spots. This is a great way to begin to spot patterns and decide where you can cut back.
Secondly, analyze your bank account statement (four weeks is ideal) to help you determine where your money is going. Review your record without judgment. What you have done, in terms of your spending, does not matter – at least not yet. What does matter is that you get a firm hold on your expenses. For example, how much money do you spend on snacks, credit, each week? Dry cleaning? Take out? Movies? You get the idea.
Next, write down all sources of income. With a list of your income and expenses in hand determine your priorities. Begin your budgeting process here. Obviously housing and other fixed costs will figure prominently on your priority list. Now, take a look at the conveniences that represent variable expenses. This is likely where you will find room to make changes. For example, if you subscribe to a video service, can you get the two DVD plan instead of the three or eight DVD plan? If you buy coffee each day, can you bring it from home a time or two each week? Or would you be willing to purchase a smaller or otherwise less expensive cup? Can you clip coupons or eat out a little less?
Afterwards, write a budget in pencil. Writing in pencil will help you remember that your budget is a fluid document. As you live with it you will probably need to make changes. That’s okay. You may even want to include a little mad money each month. It is far better to blow a budgeted Kshs. 500 than it is to impulsively fritter away Kshs. 1500.00.
Lastly, set a savings goal and make it something specific and important. A meaningful savings goal keeps feelings of deprivation away while providing the motivation you will need to stay on track. Be patient with yourself if you do get off track. If it helps, try writing your goals down and posting them or maybe even carrying a picture that represents your goal. Refer to these as often as you need. It may also be useful to try to determine what emotional need your spending fills for you and look for another way to get your needs met.
Remember, developing a new habit takes practice. In time you may even learn to love your new healthy spending habits. It is liberating to be in control of your finances. So, go ahead, write your budget and honor your savings goal. That goal can be in your future if you decide to make it happen.

EASTER EGG OR BUNNY?
Easter season is here and the holy week is mid-way.This tradition marks the critical path in Jesus Christ, the messiah's minitry and ultimately Christianity.Christ entered Jerusalem and crowds gathered, lay their palms to welcome him.A week later, the same Jesus they welcomed they now bayed for his blood. With the season, comes two concepts bunny and egg.(dont mention santa claus of xmas).
Like Santa, the bunny represented the goddess of fertility and easter then was a pagan celebration of this goddess. The egg came as a result of a tradition in England, Germany and some other countries, children rolled eggs down hills on Easter morning, a game which connected to the rolling away of the rock from Jesus Christ's tomb when he was resurrected. British settlers brought this custom to the Africa. So what does easter really mean to you?

GROWING UP?
This Morning i woke up to an interesting talk on Teenagers and Alcohlism in one of popular radio stations. For once, i laughed but then sanity quickly hit me up.The Presenters were angrilly urging the bar owners and fuel stations not to sell alcohol to underage 'kids'.To me this debate is a circus, a blame game as parents-teens-media-society seem to suggest the back stops with the other.Take a walk across town and notice the many adult DVD's posters everywhere..No one complained about them and they have been there all along! Many of the kids involved in alcoholism are alone so to speak.Their parents are busy looking for the money to pay their fees to stay in boarding schools. The teachers there well to say the least cannot be substitutes for the parents as to them, their pay is much better. The holidays are here and Party lifestyle will be on the rise. The bar owners hope to cash in on the easter holiday to sell more.So the big question, whats the solution? Should the government interven with strict laws? Should the parents enforce strict morals on their kids? Should the media continue to highlight such issues? If they do is it effective? Isnt the same media the one that brings sex talk on breakfast shows and claims its all we want to hear?that controversy sells? What is your story?
